Here’s what’s coming up
Button, Seattle and online, October 10–12, 2022
I’ll be getting vulnerable and sharing personal UX writing #fails in front of the largest community of content designers in the world. Because I’ve bullied my way to the table with product managers instead of finessing an invitation; accidentally shamed designers; pulled projects from other writers out from under their feet; and stolen from office IT. And I’m really sorry. I hope that paying it forward by sharing lessons learned the hard way will count as penance. Tickets available for this hybrid event at https://buttonconf.com
UX Salon, Tel Aviv, October 23–24, 2022
I’ll be speaking about breaking best practices, at the #1 UX conference in English in Israel. What I’m most excited about is that this is the first in-person conference I’ve spoken at in a long time. As cool as it’s been to bring content to global audiences that I only could have reached virtually, there’s nothing like the energy of actual people in an actual room. It’s also the first time I’ll be giving this talk and there’s always a nervous excitement when I put out a brand new talk for the first time. I hope you’ll join and let me know what you think! Tickets available at https://2022.uxsalon.com
Reichman University, Herzliya, October 30-January 15
I’ll be teaching a full semester course at Reichman University, to third-year communications students who have chosen to specialize in interaction design. This is huge, a bit for me but more for UX writing as a field. Do you know how long I’ve been waiting for mainstream academics to recognize that this is a professional field students should have the opportunity to learn about at the highest level before chucking them out into the job market? Academics opens whole worlds for UX writing, like opportunities for applied research, proper internships instead of bootcamps, and more. This feels like one small step for me, one giant leap for UX writing. Good luck to my students! I’ll surely be sharing more on the blog soon.
The Business of UX Writing, pre-sales open November 16, 2022
Almost 2 years ago I heard Torrey Podmajersky on a podcast, talk about writing her book, Strategic Writing for UX. I got off the treadmill and mid stretch I said to myself, wait a minute, I can do that! Torrey generously met with me virtually for advice and… fast forward my book is coming out with A Book Apart in a little over a month! I started talking about the ROI of UX writing in 30–60 minute meetup and conference talks. Then I expanded the content into a 2-hour masterclass on the O’Reilly learning platform. But the more I talked about it, the more I had to say. The more questions people asked, the more answers I wanted to give. The more I explored ROI hands on in my day job, the more insights I wanted to share. So here it is — a whole entire book, the only one as far as I know, 100% about the business of UX writing. Buy it (soon) at https://abookapart.com
